With each social media platform competing to be the most current and relevant, tapping into the ever-changing Gen Z led social media landscape, it can be hard to keep up with all the new changes. For ease, we’ve outlined some recent social media updates below to keep you in the loop.
AI Changes
Whilst concerns surrounding AI and misinformation continue to grow, META have announced that it will be tweaking the way it labels its content.
Previously, AI labels on Meta read “Made with AI”, however, this led to backlash from creators who argued that even if an image had been slightly retouched with AI, the entire post now looked AI generated. To combat these concerns, Meta has amended this label to read “AI info”, giving users the option to explore what aspects of the post have been AI generated.
YouTube is also exploring more AI software, introducing an AI-driven algorithm to help resolve copyright strikes quickly. This will be beneficial for creators and artists as it will give artists the option to “Erase Song”, whilst still allowing creators the possibility to remonetise the video once the copyright claim has been resolved.
Longer videos for Instagram and TikTok
With video content continuing to be the preferred style amongst most social media users, many apps are rethinking video formats to attract a wider audience.
Both Instagram and TikTok are currently trialling longer video lengths, this will be interesting to see if from an ad perspective this longer content impacts engagement, and from an organic perspective if it leads to an increase in more natural style content, similar to YouTube videos.
These new video updates mean Instagram Reels can now be up to 15 minutes long, with TikTok following the same move of 15-minute-long content.
For Instagram this isn’t a very surprising move as the platforms has changed greatly in recent years, through the introduction of reels and threads. However, TikTok has become known for its short snappy attention-grabbing content, so it will be interesting to see how long-form videos perform on an app that has supposedly dulled down all our attention spans.
Facebook Bulletin
With Instagram and TikTok constantly evolving, Facebook often slips under the radar, this may be attributed to its lack of Gen Z audience. However, Facebook has been making some big changes recently.
Facebook has recently launched Bulletin, a newsletter platform for writers and content creators, in response to the popularity of Substack. This service includes both free and paid subscription options and will give users more opportunities to interact with their favourite creators and refine what sort of news they’re consuming.
