The GEO Problem

What will the GEO Problem workshop cover?

More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews for a recommendation before they visit a website. If those tools never name your brand, you are out of the shortlist before anyone has searched for you. The session explains how that works and what an in-house team can do about it.

  • What generative engine optimisation (GEO) is, and how it differs from traditional SEO.
  • How AI models decide which brands to name in an answer.
  • Why earned media and press coverage matter so much for AI visibility.
  • Practical steps and tools your team can use the following week.

It draws on Prohibition’s own experience. When Google’s AI Overviews cut the agency’s own website clicks, the team rebuilt its approach around being cited, and Chris tells that story in episode 86 of the Embracing Marketing Mistakes podcast. Prohibition now runs GEO for clients and AI Overview visibility audits.

Who it is for

Who should come to Prohibition’s events?

In-house marketing, comms and PR people, from marketing executives to marketing directors. The events are for in-house teams only, so agencies and freelancers are asked not to book. Attendees need to be 18 or over.

You do not need any technical SEO knowledge. If you have noticed fewer visits from Google, or a competitor turning up in ChatGPT answers where you do not, this session is for you.

The speaker

Who speaks at Prohibition events?

Chris Norton, founder and managing director of Prohibition. Chris has more than 25 years in communications, co-hosts the Embracing Marketing Mistakes podcast and co-authored Share This Too, the CIPR social media handbook. Special guest speakers will be announced on the Eventbrite pages.

Other Prohibition events and webinars are also led by Will Ockenden, director, a social media and PR specialist with 20 years of agency experience in the UK and Australia, and Vicki Murphy, head of creative, who has been part of the Prohibition team since 2012.
