As AI continues to dominate social media discourse, we’re here to keep you in the loop with what industry experts are saying on the topic, alongside all other notable social media updates.
AI takeover
In an interview, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared that AI content will one day takeover our social feeds.
Zuckerberg commented: “Every part of what we do is going to get changed in some way [by AI]”
He argued that many of our feeds have already shifted from personalised content from our peers to content curated by influencers, outlining the first evolution in social content.
This shift from content from our friends and families, which populated feeds in the early days of social media, to algorithmically tailored video content, Zuckerberg argues, has carved out a space for greater amounts of AI generated content, as social media becomes more impersonal.
Threads
Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced that X rival, Threads had surpassed the 200 million user’s milestone just over a year since its release.
Following Elon Musk’s controversial takeover of X, which lost the platform many loyal users, some industry professionals are predicting that Threads may one day fill the space that X dominated.
In 2023, Mark Zuckerberg stated that Threads had a good chance of becoming a platform with over a billion users, and with it’s huge rise over the last year it will be interesting to see if this is one day the case.
Reddit Misinformation
With the US election upcoming, Reddit has announced major changes to help combat the circulation of misinformation regarding the election and protect the integrity of the platform.
A majority of the tactics being implemented are standard AI processing tools, similar to ones used by Meta to combat misinformation. However, a notable update was the introduction of a political ads opt-out feature, allowing users to block any advertisements of a political nature from appearing on their feeds.
Although the move seems subtle in comparison to Instagram and Threads opting users out of seeing any political content at all, it’s still a move in the right direction to prevent the spread of misinformation, which in the past has been given ample breeding ground on Reddit.
