In the fast-changing digital space that is social media, staying informed about the latest trends and changes is crucial for businesses and creators. Find out the latest updates that could impact your strategy below.

Facebook Messenger Encryption

A new addition to Facebook messenger is default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls. Messenger previously allowed users to manually turn this on, however, this option will now be the default.

This change adds an extra layer of security to keep private conversations secure and ensure users feel at ease, knowing that their personal messages are safe.

Another important change to security is a new PIN code setting. According to Facebook, users will be prompted to set up a recovery method, such as a PIN, so you can restore your messages if you lose, change or add a device. It will be interesting to see how/if this impacts business page inboxes managed by multiple users.

TikTok ‘add to music app’ feature

TikTok is currently testing a new feature called ‘add to music app’ to simplify the process of saving songs from videos, benefitting both users and artists that are flocking to the app for the opportunity to go ‘TikTok viral’.

With a single tap, the catchy beat jumps from your TikTok feed straight into your preferred music streaming service as TikTok again shows us the value in listening to user preferences. It will be interesting to see how this plays out amid the current TikTok/Universal Music debate.

LinkedIn axes lookalike audiences

Looking toward B2B, on February 29th, 2024, LinkedIn will discontinue the lookalike audience functionality. Users will no longer be able to create new lookalike audiences or edit existing ones.

Although LinkedIn is getting rid of this formally useful targeting option, LinkedIn plan to introduce alternatives of predictive audiences and audience expansion using AI models, similar to what Meta have already successfully introduced.
