It’s been a big year for social media updates and as we near the end of 2024, here are some updates you may have missed recently:
Trial Instagram reels before publishing them
Instagram has just introduced a trial reels capability allowing users to see how their content performs ahead of their followers seeing it.
When uploading a new reel, users can select the ‘trial’ feature when posting and the video will only be shown to non-followers, not appearing on the main grid or reels tab. This is a good opportunity for creators to test how their content resonates with a new audience.
24-hours after posting, creators can access the engagement metrics of their reel and if it’s performing well, they can select ‘share with everyone’ and the reel will then appear to their followers and increase in reach.
According to Ashley Alexander, Instagram VP and Head of Product Management, the feature was introduced to ensure that creators aren’t hesitant to experiment with new styles of content with their loyal audiences.
Pinterest 2025 trending report
Ahead of the new year, Pinterest has just released its trend, or ‘not-yet-trending’, report for 2025. According to Pinterest, its trends last twice as long as other trends on the internet, encouraging brands to pay attention to maximise their ROI.
The key trends, calculated from real searches on the platform are as follows:
- Cherry coded: Pinterest is predicting a rise of cherry themed marketing campaigns and deep burgundy tones in fashion
- Rococo Revival: 2025 trends will draw inspiration from the frills and opulence of the Rococo era
- Surreal soirees: With searches for ‘Modern surrealism’ up 70% on Pinterest, trend experts are predicting a rise of surrealist décor and fashion
- Castlecore: According to Pinterest, Medieval will have a moment in 2025, with Gen Z’s taking inspiration from ancient castles with gothic-inspired fashion and accessories
Meta’s ‘no edit’ feature
Meta apps Facebook and Instagram are currently testing the ability to tag shared images as ‘no edit’.
This is in stark contrast to the recent introduction of compulsory labels for AI-generated content and encourages photography lovers to distinguish their work and favourite content from artificially made posts.
