From the ongoing US TikTok deal, to deepfakes and child-safety online, here are some social media updates to be aware of:
US TikTok deal: Deadline extended amid uncertainty
President Trump has granted a second 75-day extension for TikTok to continue operating in the United States, as negotiations around its future remain unresolved. With over 170 million users in the U.S. alone, the app’s fate continues to be a topic of major political interest.
Potential buyers such as Amazon and AppLovin are still in talks, but a final agreement has yet to be reached. Meanwhile, Meta is using the uncertainty to its advantage, stepping up efforts to attract TikTok creators to its platforms. Among the latest incentives: the launch of an iPad version of Instagram, following TikTok’s continued success on the device, where it consistently ranks among the top 20 downloads.
YouTube takes a stand against deepfakes
YouTube has publicly endorsed the “Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe” (NO FAKES) Act of 2024, which seeks to hold creators and companies accountable for unauthorised AI-generated deepfakes.
As deepfake technology continues to evolve alongside generative AI, concerns around misinformation and identity theft are growing. In a blog post on 9th April, YouTube stated:
“We know AI is a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize creative expression. But we also know there are risks with AI-generated content… Platforms have a responsibility to address these challenges proactively.”
Instagram Restricts Livestreaming for Teens
Following growing concerns over youth safety online, heightened by Netflix’s harrowing mini-series Adolescence, Meta has introduced new safeguards aimed at protecting younger users.
Starting this week, teens under the age of 16 will be unable to livestream on Instagram without parental approval. This update builds on Meta’s broader efforts to create safer online environments for children, which also includes expanding Instagram’s teen-focused protections to Facebook and Messenger.
