Local PR that gets your business known where it trades
Updated October 2026.
Prohibition is a local PR agency in Leeds. We get businesses talked about in their own patch, through regional newspapers, local radio and TV, community events and local social media, and we take the best stories national. When Paws & Co opened as a brand new vet in Wakefield, our launch earned 19 pieces of coverage, a live BBC Radio Leeds slot and 17 links to its website.

What is local PR?
Local PR builds your reputation in the community you serve. It uses regional and local media, community events, local creators and social media to make people nearby trust you and choose you. Done well, it also earns links from local news sites, which helps you show up in Google’s local results. Some businesses add local TV advertising too.

Our local PR services

How do you launch a local business in the press?
Give the local media a story, not just an opening. For Carvela’s first store outside London, in Leeds’ Victoria Quarter, we brought 20+ journalists and influencers into the store. The launch earned 120+ pieces of coverage and 1.25M reach, and Carvela went ahead with its national roll-out. Our media relations team has contacts across regional titles, radio and TV.
Public relations
We find the stories that make you part of the community: people, milestones, advice and local causes. For Paws & Co we led with the vets’ advice rather than the opening itself, which won regional coverage, two national pieces and a live radio slot. See our wider public relations work.
Event management
Openings, open days and community events bring people through your door. We handle the venue, guests, media and promotion through our event PR team.

Local social media
Local audiences are easy to reach on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok if you target them well. For Paws & Co, paid social reached 31,443 local people at £0.38 per result and added 131 new followers in launch month. We run social media that speaks like a neighbour, not a national brand.
Creative marketing
Most local businesses do not have a production team. Ours makes the photos, graphics and video that show off your business to the people nearby.
Crisis communications
A bad review or a local news story spreads fast in a close-knit community. We help you respond quickly and honestly, with holding statements, spokesperson support and a plan for what happens next. See our crisis communications service.

Training
We train local teams in social media, media interviews and handling complaints, so you can manage day-to-day comms confidently in-house.
Why choose Prohibition for local PR?
Results for businesses in their own area
Birchwood Park, a business park between Manchester and Liverpool, wanted more occupiers to know about it. Our press office earned 74 pieces of coverage, 29 in tier-one trade titles, and 30 links to its website, and 20% of new occupier referrals came from it. We have done the same for Yorkshire Water, Stockeld Park and many Yorkshire businesses.

How much does local PR cost?
We work on a monthly retainer for an ongoing local press office, or a fixed fee for a launch or campaign. The cost depends on how many stories and events you need, how many towns or regions we cover, and whether you add social media or video. We give you a written quote after a first call.
A good fit
Growing businesses, attractions, venues and organisations that want to be the name people know in their area, and that have the budget for a proper campaign.
Probably not the right fit
If you only need the odd press release for the local paper, a freelance PR will be better value than an agency retainer.

Why is local PR important?
Additionally, local PR can help businesses like yours to generate buzz around new products or services, increasing brand awareness, and ultimately driving sales. Local PR strategies may vary depending on the type of business and the specific community it serves.
In summary, for small business owners, local PR plays an important part in a marketing strategy. By building relationships with the surrounding community and generating positive media attention through various tactics, businesses can establish themselves as valued members of their community and increase sales in due course.
Who might need local PR services?
- Businesses: Local businesses, especially small businesses, need local PR services to help them reach their more niche target audience. Local PR can help many businesses build relationships with local media outlets, bloggers, and influencers.
- Individuals: Individuals who want to build their personal brand or increase their visibility in their community can also benefit. For example, if you’re a local author, artist, or musician, you can use local PR to promote your work and get exposure.
- Non-profit organisations: Non-profit organisations rely heavily on donations and community support to achieve their goals. Local PR can help them reach a wider audience and increase awareness for their cause.
Government agencies: - Local government agencies can also benefit from local PR services. They can use PR to share information about community events, initiatives, and programs. This helps them build trust with the general public and improve communication with their constituents.
How do I know I’m picking the right local PR agency?
And Prohibition is exactly that! We’ve been around for 10+ years and delivering results in multiple local industries. Sponge is a client who wanted to raise awareness locally of their Norfolk-based team. We set up a series of interviews and business profiling opportunities with regional publications. Not only did this drive local traction, it positioned Sponge as an established business and employer of choice in the local area!
What PR tactics do local PR strategies involve?
One of the most important aspects of a local PR media kit is building relationships with local media outlets such as newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations. This involves reaching out to editors and reporters to offer story ideas and pitches that highlight the business or organisation’s achievements, community involvement, and other positive news.
It involves identifying the needs and interests of the target audience, crafting compelling messaging that resonates with them, and delivering it through various channels such as social media, press releases, newsletters, and events to gain maximum exposure.
What role does a public relations company play?
One of the primary functions of a PR agency is to send out press releases. A press release is a written statement, often announcing something newsworthy about the client. These are then sent out to relevant media outlets to produce coverage for the client.
In addition to creating press releases, a PR agency also works to cultivate relationships with members of the media. This involves reaching out to reporters and journalists who cover the client’s industry or area of expertise, building rapport with them, and providing them with relevant information or news story ideas.
What other services do we offer?
Our public relations services also branch out even further to reach your target consumers on a more global scale including; consumer PR, reactive marketing and newsjacking, product launch PR, and digital PR.
