What a gift PR agency does for your brand
By the time a gift shopper reaches your website, the choice is often half made in a newspaper gift guide, a creator’s video, a Which? roundup or a ChatGPT answer. Gift PR puts your products in those places in the weeks before each peak, when the decision is being made.
For gift brands, Prohibition’s work falls into four jobs:
- Gift guide placement. Sampling and pitching to the shopping writers who build national, regional and online gift guides, with coverage that links to the right product page.
- Stories the national press will run. Original research with a news hook, like the Interflora “mum salary” story below.
- Creator content. Influencers and short video that show the moment the gift is opened.
- Visibility in AI answers. Checking which brands ChatGPT and Google recommend in your category, then earning coverage in the sources they quote.
The same Leeds team plans the press, social and video, so a Christmas campaign never waits on a second agency to brief a third.

Gift brands Prohibition has already worked with
Prohibition has run gifting campaigns for florists, jewellers, photo gifts, hampers and a brewery. Every result below is published in full on the Prohibition case studies page.

Interflora, Mother’s Day
Prohibition worked out what being a mum would pay if it were a job: £172,000 a year for more than 90 hours a week. The “mum salary” calculator and a Times ad drove 73 pieces of coverage, 12 national titles, 43,000 microsite visits and a 9% rise in like-for-like sales.
Goldsmiths, Christmas
A storytelling brand film built around the gift of giving earned more than 1.7 million YouTube views and over £1M in sales from the paid strategy, with a multichannel ROI of £7.94.

Black Sheep Brewery, Christmas 2023
Gift packs, the beer advent calendar and Blitzen Christmas ale went into national, regional and lifestyle media. Of 60 pieces, 90% linked straight to the gifting page. Christmas gift purchases tripled and festive online sales rose by £21,000 on the year before.
CEWE, Christmas
Press office, influencers and a TV advert for the personalised photo gift range. The press work alone landed 46 pieces, including seven national titles and Lorraine. Prohibition has also run reactive digital PR for Prestige Flowers and five separate campaigns for Interflora.

How products get into Christmas gift guides
Products get into gift guides when samples reach the right shopping writers early, with a price and a link that works. Most brands send too late and to too many people, with nothing to say about why their product belongs on this year’s list.
Prohibition maps where each product could realistically appear before anything goes out. For Interflora’s Christmas range, that meant 109 pieces of coverage and an estimated reach of 11.9 million people. For Cartwright & Butler, it meant 78 pieces, 49 of them linking to the website, an 8% sales uplift and one Telegraph piece that sent about 4,000 visits and led to a corporate deal.
Can PR sell gifts at full price?
Yes, if the coverage lands before shoppers decide and links to a page that sells. Discounting is running out of road: Black Friday week 2025 grew UK online sales by just 1.1%, according to IMRG. A brand that a shopping editor has already recommended can hold its price, while one that nobody mentions ends up buying attention back with deeper discounts and more paid search.
Prohibition reports gift campaigns using the AMEC framework of outputs, outcomes and impact, so coverage is always traced through to traffic and sales. That is why the numbers on this page are sales figures: +9% at Interflora, +8% at Cartwright & Butler and three times the gift purchases at Black Sheep.

When gift brands should start planning each peak
Start each peak three to six months out. Long-lead magazines plan Christmas in summer, and online gift guides for Mother’s Day are written weeks before the day. This is Prohibition’s working calendar for 2027:
| Occasion | Date in 2027 | Start planning | Long-lead magazines | Online and national gift guides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valentine’s Day | Sunday 14 February | October 2026 | November | January |
| Mother’s Day | Sunday 7 March | November 2026 | December | February |
| Father’s Day | Sunday 20 June | February | March | May and June |
| Christmas | Saturday 25 December | April | July | September to November |
If your Mother’s Day plan does not exist yet, it is already late, though not too late.
How PR gets your gifts recommended by AI
More gift searches now end with an AI answer, and those answers quote trusted publishers. A November 2026 study of ChatGPT gifting answers by Visible PR and IgniteStack found Which? cited in 46% of them and Woman & Home in 26.5%. If those titles have never written about your products, ChatGPT has little reason to suggest them.
The same study found specialists can beat giants: Hampers.com and Monica Vinader were cited more than Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Pandora in their categories. Prohibition tests the gift questions your customers ask, shows you who gets recommended, and earns coverage in the sources AI quotes. One Prohibition client went from being named in 4 of 50 buyer prompts to 19.

Birthdays and everyday gifting count too
Most gifting happens outside the big peaks. Moonpig reports that 68% of UK card sales come from personal occasions such as birthdays. A brand that only shouts at Christmas leaves most of the year to its competitors.
For Interflora’s birthday flowers, Prohibition used an algorithm to find the best and worst days of the year to have a birthday (28 July and 16 December). The story earned 146 radio pieces, 76 national and regional print pieces and 122,000 views of a surprise birthday video, and like-for-like sales of birthday products rose.
How much gift PR with Prohibition costs
Gift PR projects and retainers with Prohibition start from £12,000. The price depends on how many peaks you want to cover, whether creators and video are included, and how many product ranges are involved. A single Christmas gift guide campaign sits at the lower end. A year-round plan covering every peak, with video, sits higher. Every engagement starts with a free gift visibility check, so you know what you would be paying to fix before you commit.
Who leads Prohibition’s gift PR work
Gift campaigns at Prohibition are led by Chris Norton, Founder and Managing Director, with Will Ockenden, Director. Chris founded Prohibition in Leeds and co-hosts the Embracing Marketing Mistakes podcast, which has spent 14 months in the UK Apple Marketing top five.
Is Prohibition the right gift PR agency for you?
A good fit if you
- Sell gifts or have a gift range, from flowers and jewellery to hampers and beer
- Judge PR on sales, not clippings
- Want press, social and video planned together
Not the right fit if you
- Have a budget below £12,000
- Only want to send products to hundreds of influencers, which an influencer seeding platform will do more cheaply
Questions gift brands ask before hiring Prohibition
Is a gifting PR agency the same as influencer gifting?
They overlap, but influencer gifting means sending free products to creators in the hope they post. Gift PR covers press, gift guides, creators and AI visibility, with a story and a sales target behind it. Prohibition uses creators where they fit the plan.
Do you only work with Yorkshire brands?
No. Prohibition is based in Leeds, but most of its gift clients sell nationally, including Interflora, Goldsmiths and CEWE.
How soon will we see results?
Coverage lands when gift guides publish, so timing depends on the peak. A Mother’s Day campaign started in November can deliver in February. Christmas gift guide work needs to start by the summer.
