PR work placements: how to get one and make it count

Updated October 2026.

A PR work placement is the fastest way into the industry, because most agencies, including Prohibition, rarely hire someone with no hands-on experience. We receive several placement requests a week and can only offer a handful each year, so here is what makes a candidate stand out, both when applying and once you are in.

Do your research

Prohibition is an integrated PR, social media and creative agency. Know a little about our clients, our recent campaigns and what is happening in PR and social, especially among your own age group. You do not need to be an expert, but get the basics right.

Make it personal

Do not just email a generic address. Our team is active on social media, so get to know us there first, then send a short, specific message about why you want to work with us.

Bring the right attitude

Personality matters. Treat the placement like a real job: be on time, ask for work when you run out, stay organised and keep your phone away. Work experience is not box ticking, so get stuck in, and ask for help when something is tricky. It shows you want to learn.

Think creatively

You know what your peer group is doing on social media better than we do. Share it. Fresh ideas always impress.

Get your writing right

Spell check everything, especially your CV and covering letter. Careless mistakes are the quickest way to stand out for the wrong reason.

Can a placement lead to a job?

Yes. Many of our team started with work experience or an internship with us. If you want to get your foot in the door, this is the way. Read our PR interview tips and see our careers page to apply.
