Filmmaking or video production is the process of making a film, intended for a large theatrical or media display.

The stages of Film making

Film production consists of five major stages:
Development: The first stage in which the ideas for the film are created, rights to books/plays are bought, etc., and the screenplay is written. Financing for the project must be sought and obtained.

Pre-production: Arrangements and preparations are made for the shoot, such as hiring cast and film crew, selecting locations and constructing sets.

Production: The raw footage and other elements for the film are recorded during the film shoot.

Post-production: The images, sound, and visual effects of the recorded film are edited and combined into a finished product.

Distribution: The completed film is distributed, marketed, and screened in cinemas and/or released to home video.

The role of public relations (PR) in the film industry is to raise awareness of productions by distributors, film festivals, moviegoers, and other social influencers to create interest in those films.

Unit Publicists (UPs) provide a critical channel during film shoots between producers, actors, crew, and press. They allow sales agents to market films and create public awareness by creating ads.

The role of a film distributor

Film distributors usually release a movie with a launch party, a red-carpet premiere, press releases, press interviews, press preview screenings, and screenings at film festivals. Some movies are also marketed separately from those of the production company or distributor, with their own individual website. Key personnel are often contractually required for major films to participate in promotional tours in which they appear at premieres and festivals and to sit for interviews with many television, print, and online journalists. In order to reinvigorate audience demand at each release window, the largest productions may require more than one promotional tour.
