We’re here to help you stay on top of the latest social media updates. This month our focus is of course on Instagram Threads, the latest social media app to hit our screens. There have also been some other updates this month – check out the latest here.

Instagram threads

The biggest update for July is of course Instagram Threads! This is a new text-based app set to rival Twitter. It saw over two million sign-ups within the first two hours!

Here’s what you need to know about Threads:

  • It’s a new app, built by Instagram, that has the purpose of sharing text updates and joining in trending public conversations.
  • You log in using your Instagram account, so there’s no need to create a new profile. You can choose to follow all the people you currently follow on Instagram, or you can decline and start fresh.
  • Posts can be up to 500 characters long and can include links, photos and videos. Videos can be five minutes long.
  • You can also share a Threads post to your Instagram story, or share your post as a link on any other platform.

This is absolutely one to watch for brands and businesses who don’t want to fall behind the curve.

Instagram are also rolling out the option to add up to three collaborators to any feed post or reel, sharing the content to all of their audiences! This feature will allow brands and businesses to maximise the reach of their posts by tapping into additional audiences.

Twitter paywall updates

As they face a serious rival in Instagram Threads, Twitter is continuing with an array of platform updates which may be doing more harm than good. Twitter is due to limit the ability to send DMs to people who don’t follow your account on the app, making the options available only to paying subscribers.

Elon Musk also announced a ‘temporary’ reading limit for non-Twitter Blue users on 1st July in response to a temporary outage on the site, limiting users to viewing only 600 tweets. Could paywall updates be Twitter’s final downfall? Watch this space…

TikTok Creative Challenge

TikTok are introducing more ways for creators to collaborate with brands through their ‘Creative Challenge’ initiative.

TikTok Creative Challenge is a new feature within the app itself that allows creators to submit video ads to brand or business challenges, receiving performance-based rewards. Each challenge has a brief for creators to follow, which also explains the reward details, rules and regulations.

This is an interesting move in the influencer/UGC space, putting the onus on creators to come forward.

LinkedIn 2023 algorithm

LinkedIn introduced a native carousel option, but have since removed the option following creator feedback, sad news for LinkedIn marketeers that enjoyed the option!

LinkedIn also implemented an updated algorithm for 2023. We recognised the most important takeaway as: ‘Posts that share “knowledge and advice” are now prioritized throughout the platform.’

This is important for any business or brand – prioritise that thought-leadership activity!
